This funny video is from Ecotricity, a green energy company based in Stroud, Gloucestershire, England specialising in selling and generating wind power. It is part of their new campaign entitled “Dump The Big Six”. The Big Six stands for British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, Npower, Scottish & Southern and Scottish Power.

Ecotricity founder Dale Vince OBE, the man credited with kick-starting the world’s green electricity market, believes now is the moment to topple the grey giants and bring the UK into the renewable energy future.

Ecotricity: Half of Britons feel the source of future energy supplies is one of the most important environmental issues facing the nation yet less than 1% currently use a green energy supplier (Ofgem, October 2011). Over 60% of UK households could switch to Ecotricity and get greener energy for not one penny more than they are currently paying.

The collapsing cooling tower imagery was inspired by web artist Herman Bailey’s “Sad Chimney” gif. Herman is credited as part of the creative team behind the campaign.

The campaigns starts with the viral video and with a Facebook app “Dump The Big Six”. The aim is to reach a huge audience.

Super cool series online by Skateboarder Magazine, "Raiders of the Archives." They are short videos looking into the offices and/or archives (literally, shelves, boxes, walls) of great artists and photographers in the professional skateboard world. This post links to my favorite (though they are all great), that being Andy Jenkins, one of my favorite artists, whom I've posted about before. He gives the rare treat of showing some of the conceptual work that happens before a graphic or ad is made, including sketches and renderings from another one of my absolute favorites, Evan Hecox who does amazing graphics for Chocolate Skateboards.

Very inspiring series, and makes you want to dig into the vaults. (And get organized...)

Paint scrapers from 6 month-long lead paint removal on our porch. Mementos of endurance, His and Hers. Composite/Masonite hand-made frame, screw-mounted. Painted with the porch paint. No alterations of any kind were made to the tools. Just gel medium to seal in the lead paint coating.

My folks have been having a bit of a rodent problem...

Same type of frame build, 1 Victor mousetrap (proudly stolen from my folks), and one old, poor HP mouse.

I went looking for dark or evil or scary, for a Halloween post. What happened? My drawings from childhood far topped anything I have to show for now. I always went through the red crayon first. I projected my own night terrors. Anyway, gore and evil and dark was much more prevalent when I was a child. Guess this means I'm healthy now, but the trade is tame, foo-foo art.

Been diggin' through the vaults, finding old Art Institute work and comparing it (curca '94) to the stuff I had to do for my current degree. Back then, "digital design" was a concept, not an actuality. We were all hands-on, even with type faces. I miss that, and am lucky I got to get both worlds.

This was a great class. Wish I remember who the teach was. He was a weird, pony-tailed body-builder who played Enya and Fresh Air during drawing sessions. It could have been creepy, but the guy understood the core to drawing from sight. I would be drawing in pieces, composing figures how I knew how -comic book style that I had learned from books I had when I was a little kid. (e.g., HOW TO DRAW A SKULL: START WITH A CIRCLE, THEN AN OVAL, TWO MORE CIRCLES FOR EYE HOLES, AN UP-SIDE-DOWN HEART FOR THE NOSE HOLE...."), then applying that to comic book art which was obviously done in the same way. He would catch me doing this and immediately make me stop. "Draw what you see....not in isolated bits...feel the line that your eyes trace, and let it happen on its own. Let the hand follow the mind, not the other way around." Whether you end up with the right proportions or not, the technique felt more fluid, natural, even intimate. You felt the composition render itself, rather than building it robotically, block-by-block.

Steve Brodner once told me, after asking him if used reference material for his sketches, "Drawing is seeing." (Not name dropping, just cool to interact with a hero....and it was a good quote.)

"I think you can define drawing, or the drawing impulse, in a variety of ways: It is concerned with the line, as opposed to color or form; there is typically a concern with movement -- what is a drawing if not the record of the movement of the hand over a piece of paper; and finally there is an interest in the process of thought, by which I mean that drawing, even it its most expanded form, has a relation to language in that it structures the creation of meaning."

First time for me and mine visiting Letter Press event at SVC, called "Wayzgoose" this weekend. Definitely need more time, to peruse and get a poster printed next year. Several groups print all day via large poster plates, hand-rolled ink, and a steam roller. They hang them from the balcony railings of the buildings successive floors. Very cool. Print shop, movable type bins and machines are inside. Highly recommended event.

Lastnights flash snowstorm was a fun surprise. I enjoy "harsh" weather, just as long as it changes with the seasons. Using a flash in falling snow added a stipple effect to the graffiti shots. Wish it had all stuck around longer than morning.

Finally finished what was supposed to be a mother's day gift in 2008. (see older post about pending work here) Needless to say it swallowed many hours. Pen and ink, scanned in sections, realigned the scans, used channels to isolate sections and color in certain layers. Also made some major structural changes, such as the flames in the background, by mirroring one side and cloning it....I even made her taller by warping a lower section of her in Photoshop. 17 layers, 25 channels. Guh. But it turned out nice, Kinko's (Fed Ex, ahem) did a decent job printing, however late.

Poor angel remained crushed underfoot. I can't even remember why I was mad at him to begin with.

Like I wrote on the back, "Happy every day Ma!"

Satisfied a powerful lust for a Zip-Zinger. A friend (thanks Jesse), knowing how broke I tend to be, suggested I make the deck myself. It worked out really well, after 7 hours of labor. Used an old Flip deck I randomly won in an online trivia contest. The hardest part is definitely the drawing of the shape. Much props to the board shapers out there.

Tattoo designs have always been fun projects.

This one was for friend of old Lisa. She had a loose idea of wanting a wood-carved hippopotamus with her name in hieroglyphics somewhere. I had this Egyptian rubber stamp kit that I used as a reference for the pictogram. Later, a google search would contradict what the stamp set showed to be the letters L-I-S-A, but I never found out which was more correct. The background fill between the body was photoshopped. I have to get rid of the gold look. It aint hippo-bling. The rest is just colored pencil. Time-consuming medium but a very unique result.

This is the first computer-generated logo-ish image I ever created. The idea required perfect lines and angles. Started with doing the math of the angle of the axis, deciding how much twist I wanted to each side, making the outline symmetrical in Illustrator, and doing the shading in Photoshop. It was a good learner, as I was just starting out with those applications. I wanted to do something Escher-ish, as he's somebody I looked up to since I was little. And I liked the look of the Penrose triangle. But I wanted something I hadn't seen before, so I closed off the space in between and mulled on that for a bit. I got lucky and after a few sketches, this took an impossible yet sleek shape. I'm not often proud of my work, but I had to be if I was going to put it on my body. Got lucky. It often gets mistaken for the Japanese symbol for family, and most people think it's a fan. Yes, I am just a fan fan. I love fan.

Took the final print to Baby Ray at Spotlight Tattoo and tho hesitant to do some other dudes work without a personal touch, he did it. It has a bit of scarring and needs a makeover, but I'm overly-sketchy/anal about having other people permanently draw on me, and thus, it's been about 10 years now and no new ink. Yeah yeah, I know.

Big Lou was a friend I worked with from Los Angeles. A 6 foot 4 inch, 300+lbs Mexican, (a real teddy bear actually) he was shot in a drive-by at a party for him, the night he got out of being hospitalized, for being shot. He was getting out of the street scene, but still had an affinity for the art, as did/do I. He wanted a clown, and I knew right away the type he meant, fairly prevalent in Chicano art. I had seen a good one Mr. Cartoon had sprayed south of downtown. I didn't do it justice, but this was decent enough for ink. Never saw the finished product. Hope Baby Huey is staying out of trouble and doing well.

I want to design some more tattoos. Anyone?

I have a bamboo fetish. I could stare at any free growing bamboo for hours. Lithe and long-lined, strong and yet graceful, not rigid. Leaves like knife blades. Stark yellowish-green hues. Great raspy sound in the wind.

It's a little more tedious, and less sensual, when you try and still life it by pencil. The Chinese found that brush and ink allowed for a gentle and yet still sharp way of creating such images. And you could produce these images rather quickly, like bamboo grows. Art imitates life, often times even in process.

I HAD SPOKEN WITH AN AGGRESSIVE REPEAT CALLER (AS WE CALL THE CHRONIC CALLERS) AND WAS THINKING ABOUT HOW SHE WAS SO PISSED OFF THAT THE SOCIAL SERVICE PROGRAMS WE REFERRED HER TO (I WORK AT A 2-1-1 CALL CENTER) WERE NOT PAYING OFF QUICK ENOUGH, AND SHE JUST KEPT CALLING AND YELLING AT EVERYONE WHO ANSWERED TO PHONE.

I never will understand the concept that some of our more colorful callers (not a racial adjective) espouse -that someone could yield better service by increasing abusive behavior and harassment. It takes that whole weird notion of entitlement (that’s another doosey by itself) and adds a kick to the groin to try and get results.

I understand the stress is a factor, but it’s like insulting your prison guard to try and get him to let you out. (no prison pun intended)

Why do people feel entitled to assistance in the first place? They call it a rat race for a reason. Capitalist societies are not meant to pick up the fallen. I guess it’s based on hope. Hope that some of the some part of the system is working to help the unfortunate, just out of Greatness.

Before I got this job, I didn’t know (or expect) that so many social services actually existed. It blew my mind that someone could get their rent paid for them and not have to earn it. I lived in poverty for years and never thought to ask for help. Didn’t even cross my mind. I wonder if I would have had I known about it.

I think it’s a cultural phenomenon, where parents who know the system/had to use it, pass on the attitude of getting what you can, where you can, however you can. I just wish that taught behavior more often came with an altruistic reflexive trait, even if it were just gratitude. It always makes you feel better to help those who you know have appreciation.

Of course, that’s not part of our job….treat them all the same, do not judge, we don’t know the story. A good rule, but sometimes an Ayishia comes along and rubs you wrong.

Actually, she didn’t really phase me. But it was a long day, and the last call. By that time I was comfortably numb.

Being broken or "braided" on the wheel was one of the most insidiously painful methods of torTure and execution practiCed in Europe.

After hanging, “breaking with the wheel” was the most common means of execution throughout Germanic Europe from the early Middle Ages to the beginning of the eighteenth century; in Gallic and Latin Europe the breaking was done with massive iron bars and with maces instead of wheels.

The victim, naked, was stretched out supine on the ground or on the execution dock, with his or her limbs spread, and tied to stakes or iron rings. Stout wooden crosspieces were placed under the wrists, elbows, ankles, knees and hips. The executioner then smashed limb after limb and joint after joint, including the shoulders and hips, with the iron-tired edge of the wheel, but avoiding fatal blows. The victim was transformed, according to the observations of a seventeenth-century German chronicler, “into a sort of huge screaming puppet writhing in rivulets of blood, a puppet with four tentacles, like a sea monster, of raw, slimy and shapeless flesh mixed up with splinters of smashed bones”. Thereafter the shattered limbs were “braided” into the spokes of the large wheel, and the victim hoisted up horizontally to the top of a pole, where the crows ripped away bits of flesh and pecked out eyes. Death came after what was probably the longest and most atrocious agony that the ingenuousness of the power structure could inflict.

This thing is an absolute bitch to photograph. Walls on every side and glass covering. Electronics parts, xeroxed (use this word in game of scrabble and you will win...) Jesus, glued watch parts, painted Nicho box. It was the funnest thing to build so far. I like working with little parts. I think I would make a good bomb disposal tech. Grandpa watchmaker and father surgeon. I believe habit influences DNA. Or it could be as simple as traits passed on from the weathered technical aptitudes of men of craft trade? Whatever the case, I enjoy taking things apart and putting things together. Too bad my fingers are so big.

I like the cross made of electronic paneling. I plan to recreate this concept again.

In the future, we will be crucified via neurologically uploaded data. The materialization of Hell will be of mans device, and it will be virtual, and electronic. No fire or brimstone necessary. The next (form of) inquisition will be digital.

Originally, the bird was to be wounded, with a splint or something on his right wing. Not the easiest thing to conceive, so under time constraint, I left it sort of ambiguous. The first drawing had no sling tho, so I guess this is O.G., whatever it may mean. I just think pigeons are lazy, even though they can fly quite well. This one's for Lara.

Been making clocks out of kits. This one is Styrofoam backed (not recommended) with gel medium and gesso shell, and a card-stock face, printed with a cropped Andrew Wyeth lighthouse painting. The arms of the clock exit out of the window on the lighthouse. Cindy seems to dig it.

Did this in 1993, high school. Seemed a cool idea at the time, because there was a lot of generic Legalize It hoopla going on to sell t-shirts and whatnot at Above The Belt, etc., and I thought this could be a counter to it. I thought it also kept me sort of separated categorically from my other straight edge friends.

The interesting thing about this is, because it got such a good overall response from people, I mailed it to myself, to budget-copy write it. I eventually forgot about it, until I saw a Think Skateboards hat with the exact same idea (it more resembled a curved one I did that looked more like a pot plant, I'll add it later if I can find it) embroidered on it. I was dumbstruck. It was so similar.How did this happen?

The copy write was buried somewhere for years.

But I wasn't alone, it didn't end there. My artist buddy Dan had also done up a very unique graphic, a half of a skateboard carved out of a tree stump. A nice drawing, which I believe Marley had done a quick-run graphic for. But, soon after, Think Skateboards came out with the exact same graphic. Dan hadn't secured a copy write. But still, even if we both had legit copy writes, I don't know if we were prepared at the time to go head to head with Greg Carroll....

Thanks for sending it over, Dan. I can't find the Think versions so far.

This is just a note to self....

The sitting woman became way too manic, and is now a manic collage, completely covered. The black and white (greyscale) face was done over the manic woman. She was just too hard to get the proportions. The B&W squiggles, who knows. I was in a brush stroke phase. The pieced together woman with her fingers interlaced was actually the first thing on the canvas with the other sitting woman and B&W face. (My dissatisfaction is economical!) She eventually evolved into an erased charcoal piece that is on my website. And El Dia de Madre, well, I never really liked how the drawing turned out. I feel bad about that one, because it was supposed to be a gift. Sorry Ma, still belaboring the process vs. my taste....
